Scottish house prices are continuing to increase - but the number of property sales has dropped.

New figures today revealed that in the three months to the end of July, the cost of the average domestic property rose by 1.6%, taking the average price of a home in Scotland to £172,185.

Experts said this demonstrated the "traditional resilience" of the Scottish housing markets, bucking the trend of falling house prices in some other parts of the UK.

According to the latest Scottish House Price Monitor from Lloyds TSB Scotland, properties witnessed an annual rise of 9.3%. But the number of house transactions has fallen by 27% since the same period last year.

Edinburgh and Glasgow saw rises in the last quarter of 1.9% and 0.6%, taking the average propert y cost to £226,652 and £167,703.
